Vintage Reads: Difficult Conversations

By dennis | In Vintage Reads | on June 20, 2016

Vintage Reads is a series of brief reviews of books pertaining to health, fitness, and self-improvement.

Title
Difficult Conversations: How to Discuss What Matters Most
Author
Douglas Stone, Bruce Patton, Sheila Heen of the Harvard Negotiation Project

Back Cover Synopsis
Whether we’re dealing with an underperforming employee, disagreeing with our spouse about money or child-rearing, negotiating with a difficult client, or simply saying “no,” or “I’m sorry” or “I love you,” we attempt or avoid difficult conversations every day. No matter how competent we are, we all have conversations that cause anxiety and frustration.

How it Reads
This book describes a process to break down and understand every day difficult conversations.

  1. Consider the “Three Conversations” within any difficult conversation
  2. -What Happened?
-How does everyone feel about what happened?
-How does this affect how people feel about themselves?

  3. Determine your purpose for starting a difficult conversation
  4. Start by describing the situation from a third-party perspective by spelling out the differences between both viewpoints
  5. Ask for the other person’s perspective and then add your input
  6. Problem Solve by inventing options that meet each side’s concerns and interests

Difficult Conversations breaks down each of these steps with a variety of pragmatic examples for real-world issues. These examples were my favorite part of the book because I was able to relate to several of the examples from my professional and personal experiences. Reading this book has improved my confidence in addressing future disagreements and I have a feeling it can help many others!
