Matt left his native Michigan to study Geoscience at the University of Wyoming and Montana State University before completing a PhD in Geophysics at UTEP… what had started out as an endless pursuit of excellent snowboarding resulted in a move to Houston in 2007.
Matt has always been active, having played football, track and wrestling in school. Thirty years of snowboarding and footballing took its toll on Matt’s lower back, and in 2009 he was recommended back surgery to manage a condition called spondylolisthesis. Thankfully, Matt opted for CrossFit instead of surgery and has been able to keep his back healthy via the strength, agility and flexibility that CrossFit provides.
More recently, Matt has enjoyed road cycling, triathlon, adventure races and running, but is most happy when he’s CrossFitting! In 2010, when Matt organized his own lunchtime CrossFit workouts at his work’s corporate gym, people would ask “what are you doing?!”. Soon he was hosting classes 5x a week with a following of 100+ people. Since then, Matt’s passion for CrossFit and love of coaching has only gathered speed!
Matt received his Level 1 Certification in 2012 and will take the CrossFit Olympic Lifting Trainer course in October. He is excited to join the Vintage Coaching Team!
